THE RANGE REPORT OFFERS HOW-TO TRIPLE PLAY . . . When NSSF's publication for club officers and managers of recreational shooting facilities wanted to introduce a step-by-step article on building a swivel-seat benchrest, it resorted to multiple means of communicating the project. Besides the article that appears in the current Fall '08 issue of The Range Report, a version with additional photographs as well as a video that takes the viewer through the whole building process, has been posted to www.rangeinfo.org, where visitors can also subscribe to the quarterly magazine and potential advertisers can obtain a media kit.
HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATES RIFLE RANGE TO FALLEN G.I. . . . Waukegan, Ill., High School emphasized that firearms can have a proper place in its offerings to its students by dedicating its renovated shooting range to the memory of 1st Lt. David Giaimo, a 1999 graduate who was killed in Iraq. Giaimo was the elected the high school's rifle team captain while a junior and senior and took the state championship both years. In the current issue of The Range Report, Mark Taylor tells of how the Roanoke, Va., school district has extended its curriculum to offer shooting, and offers some advice on how ranges and clubs might attempt to introduce shooting to schools.
USPSA SHOOTERS TAKE 10 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS . . . The United States captured six team and four individual world titles at the International Practical Shooting Confederation World Shoot XV, held in Bali, Indonesia. Individual winners included Spc. K.C. Eusebio, Diamond Bar, Calif., junior Open; Athena Lee, Houston, Texas, lady Open; Sgt. Travis Tomasie, Kirkland, Wash., Standard; and JoJo Vidanes, Norco, Calif., Modified. Eusebio and Tomasie are members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.
NATIONAL SPORTING CLAYS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD IN SAN ANTONIO . . . The 2008 National Sporting Clays Championship was held Thursday to Sunday at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. Results and video highlights are available at the National Sporting Clays Association's Web site, mynsca.com.
KUDOS . . . From an item in the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune: The Scholastic Shooting Trust has given a $12,670 grant to the University of Missouri Shooting Team to help provide the opportunity for the team to practice more, compete in additional tournaments and improve competitiveness. The Scholastic Shooting Trust is a mission of MidwayUSA Foundation Inc., an initiative of Larry and Brenda Potterfield to support education in shooting sports, hunting, firearms safety and outdoor skills.

MAGAZINE EXPLORES HUNTING'S CHALLENGES . . . Over the past year, Delta Waterfowl magazine has published a series of articles on "The Vanishing Hunter" that explores many related topics, including research on hunting participation and hunter attitudes, challenges facing the North American Wildlife Model, introducing youth to hunting, the outdoor media and its role in telling the important story of wildlife conservation funding, and, coming in the winter issue, strategies for restoring hunter numbers.
DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR EXPANDS PROTECTION OF SAGE GROUSE . . . The Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA) has ruled in support of a decision by the Buffalo, Wyo., office of the Bureau of Land Management to expand protection around greater sage grouse mating areas from 2 to 3 miles, despite challenges from energy companies. Vocal in their support of the ruling have been the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and the North American Grouse Partnership. "We often hear that the federal government can do nothing for wildlife once energy leases are issued, but the IBLA ruling renders that argument moot," said TRCP Vice President for policy Dr. Terry Z. Riley.
HUNTNG AND FISHING DAY ADVOCATE NAMED TO ILLINOIS OUTDOOR HALL OF FAME . . . Four Illinoisans with decades of dedication to enhancing outdoor recreation and natural resources protection in the state have been selected for induction into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame. The notable honorees are William H. Guerini, Spring Valley; Don Hankla, Anna; Dr. George B. Rabb, Brookfield; and Dwight Hoffard, Johnston City. For more than 20 years, Hoffard has been the driving force in the success of the Southern Illinois National Hunting and Fishing Days festival on the campus of John A. Logan College in Carterville.
